JOILYNN HOPKINS

As a multidimensional artist, JoiLynn creates art in the realm of dance, film, and music with her unique vision of provocativeness, jagged edges and mystery expressed through a technicality and artistry that marries the entertainment and art worlds. She trained at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, Boston Conservatory, and The Ailey School before studying Haitian folklore and Hip Hop styles in the underground scene of NYC. She has been a featured dancer in numerous stage, film and TV projects and has performed on Michael and Kelly, Rachel Ray, Ellen, The David Letterman, and Jimmy Kimmel shows and has performed at Coachella, The Apollo, and the Canadian Juno Awards. She has been a Core dancer for Impulse Dance Company, Balance Dance Theatre, Ase Dance Theatre Collective, JuxtaPower, and Jazz Ain’t Dead, in addition to being part of the cast for the development of “Holler if You Hear Me” a Broadway show based on the work of Tupac Amaru Shakur and “Journey to the West” a Broadway show based on the life of Bruce Lee. She was also a swing for the off Broadway show “Seeing You” choreographed by Ryan Heffington. You can also see her in music videos for recording artists Jay-Z, Laura Pausini, and Kiesza with whom she is also a lead dancer for her stage shows throughout the US and abroad.

 

Through JoiLynn Productions, she produces and creates innovative dance based projects and collaborations for stage and film. Known as a sort of “sci-fi” choreographer, she choreographs with a variety of techniques and music from punk rock and classical to hip-hop. She creates concepts that cross borders combining elements of film, visual art, fashion, and even magic. Her work has been featured in projects such as “The Rainbow Project’ in Barbados, The Ladies Of Hip Hop Festival, DC Fringe Festival, Harlem Stage, for recording artists Sofi Green and Wunmi, for “The Shipment” a play by Young Jean Lee, at Sol Afrik: African Fashion Week in NYC, and “Michael and Michael have issues“ on Comedy Central. As an artist who is serious

about the pedagogy and technique of dance, she is also a master instructor for the Joffrey Ballet School and teaches for the Junior Division at The Ailey School in addition to having worked as a dance critic, dance grant panelist, competition judge, and having been a featured artist in Dance Mogul magazine. JoiLynn further expresses her connection with music as a vocalist and songwriter. She has been a vocalist featured in music with recording artist Caktuz, General Steele of Smif-N-Wessun, and in stage shows with afro beat sensation Wunmi .
